Fan voting for the 2023 MLB All-Star Game starting position players is underway and Monday afternoon, Major League Baseball announced its first voting update. Atlanta Braves superstar Ronald Acuña Jr leads all players in votes, followed by Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani. Acuña is the only player to date with 1,000,000 votes.

As a reminder, there are now two stages to the vote. Stage 1 ends at noon ET on June 22, and the top two voters at each position (top six outfielders) then advance to Stage 2. The winner of Stage 2 will be selected as the All-Star Game starter at their position. Here are the top two voters in each position and their vote totals:

American League

Catcher

Adleyrutschman, Orioles (460496)

Jonah Heim, Rangers (320028)

First base

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Blue Jays (545,976)

Yandy Diaz, Rays (533179)

Second base

Marcus Semien, Rangers (707712)

Jose Altuve, Astros (363,013)

Short stop

Bo Bichette, Blue Jays (775221)

Corey Seager, Rangers (376,659)

Third base

Matt Chapman, Blue Jays (475,322)

Josh Jung, Rangers (470836)

Outfield

Aaron Judge, Yankees (844,965)

Randy Arozarena, Rays (532489)

Outfield

Mike Forel, Angels (598918)

Kevin Kiermaier, Blue Jays (422,341)

Outfield

Jordan Alvarez, Astros (571,986)

Adolis Garcia, Rangers (300968)

Designated batter

Shohei Ohtani, Angels (924182)

Brandon Belt, Blue Jays (205,659)

As a reminder, the race at this point is between the player in second and third place in each position (outfielder in sixth and seventh place). You just need to be in the top two to advance. The vote totals are reset in the second phase of the vote.

The closest race to this point is at the catcher, where fewer than 7,500 votes separate Heim from the Royals’ third-placed Salvador Perez. Blue Jays right fielder George Springer is within 25,000 votes of García for the final outfield spot. No other position is separated by fewer than 75,000 votes, thought it is still very early in the voting.

Rangers and Blue Jays fans came out strong early on. Eleven Blue Jays and Rangers are among 18 players currently in position to advance to Phase 2 of the voting.

National League

Catcher

Sean Murphy, Braves (603501)

Will Smith, Dodgers (419,587)

First base

Freddie Freeman, Dodgers (775503)

Pete Alonso, Mets (377,749)

Second base

Luis Arraez, Marlins (509092)

Ozzie Albies, Braves (376,726)

Short stop

Orlando Arcia, Braves (406509)

Francisco Lindor, Mets (302051)

Third base

Nolan Arenado, Cardinals (410,122)

Austin Riley, Braves (368,044)

Outfield

Ronald Coinage Jr., Braves (1,086,537)

Juan Soto, parents (339,009)

Outfield

Mookie Betts, Dodgers (676,491)

Corbin Carroll, Diamondbacks (232,565)

Outfield

Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Diamondbacks (367,348)

Fernando Tatis Jr., Padres (207,474)

Designated batter

J. D. Martinez, Dodgers (412,373)

Bryce Harper, Phillies (380345)

The National League races are not much closer than the American League. Dodgers slugger Max Muncy trails Riley at third base by just under 10,000 votes, and Braves ballhawk Michael Harris II is just over 15,000 votes away from entering the outfield mix. The first player on the outside to look at all other positions is no less than 90,000 votes away.

Fans of the NL East leading Braves have come out very strong in the early days of the vote. A Braves player is currently in a position to advance to Stage 2 of the voting at any position except first base and DH. There’s still plenty of time to get those votes in, though.

The 2023 MLB All-Star Game will be played at T-Mobile Park in Seattle on Tuesday, July 11. Full All-Star Game rosters will be announced on Sunday, July 2. Phase 2 of the fan voting will take place from June 26 to 29.
