After nearly five dramatic hours of trading, trading, and trading, the 2023 NBA Draft is officially on the books. And while 58 different players saw their dreams come true and heard their names called during the draft night, unfortunately there were plenty of other players whose hopes of being called up did not come true. Among those who were in the draft but not selected were Ricky Council IV of Arkansas, Terquavion Smith of NC State, and a trio of college stars in Adama Sanogo of UConn, Drew Timme of Gonzaga, and Oscar Tshiebwe of Kentucky.
This isn’t a death knell for their careers, of course — players like Austin Reaves and Fred VanVleet have played roles in the NBA after being drafted, it’s part of the company — but it’s a milestone worth remembering, as we close a close and think about this year’s design.
In the end, this is just a checkpoint as they continue to pursue their basketball dreams, and some if not all will have opportunities for two-way deals or Exhibit 10 deals to showcase their talents for NBA teams. (In fact, many already do.) But a stub is a stub, and we need to wax them to remember those who, despite pre-draft expectations, leave a post-draft world excluded from the 58 draft night announcements.
