Rihanna’s halftime Super Bowl performance was a visual phenomenon that has been reeling fans of soccer and the singer’s multi-platinum catalog ever since. On April 14, the Los Osos High School varsity dance team in Southern California took Rihanna’s “Work” to heart and recreated her halftime routine for their Spring Dance Show, right down to the costumes and badass choreography.
“We definitely put a lot of time and work into this, but every minute was so worth it.”
“Proud is an understatement,” the team’s dance coach, Rachel Muego, captioned a clip of the performance on her Instagram account. “The fact that they learned this in a month and a half! Whatever crazy ideas I throw out, they take it with complete confidence and bring everything to life. We certainly put a lot of time and work into this idea, but every minute it was so worth it.”
At one point during the performance, more than 80 students were scattered around the basketball court, moving in perfect sync to the tune of Kanye West’s “All of the Lights” featuring Rihanna and Kid Cudi. The routine consisted of tumbling, stunts, elaborate lighting and pyrotechnic displays.
Several students even took turns wearing a costumed version of Rihanna’s signature red jumpsuit. On flyers ahead of the event, the team also called on their classmates to dress up in white hoodies and sunglasses as a sign of support for the performance — and to show their love for Rihanna. In the TikTok comments section, the official NFL page wrote, “This is awesome omg.”
Towards the end of the production, the school’s principal, Mr. Cypher, made a cameo and led the troupe of dancers around the basketball court as they put on an impressive light show. “I think Mr. Cypher just found a second career!” one commenter wrote on Instagram. “Another phenomenal performance!” Another user added, “Not the main one who did!! He ate!”
On TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, the reactions overflowed with rave reviews. “This is so impressive. I hope Rihanna sees this and comes to your school, you really deserve it,” one user wrote, echoing the sentiments of dozens of other commenters. While Rihanna herself hasn’t shared her thoughts on the performance, her team did give the dance crew a shoutout on social media. “Okay y’all ate it all,” the Savage x Fenty page wrote on Instagram. In a separate comment, Rihanna’s team added, “An entire high school SLAY.”
This isn’t the team’s first time stealing the spotlight. Last month, the dance crew made headlines when they hosted a pep rally featuring performances to a medley of Latinx dance hits, including Bad Bunny’s “Tití Me Preguntó,” Farruko’s “Pepas,” and J Balvin’s “Qué Calor” and Major Lazer featuring Saweetie . In September 2022, the team also showcased their best superhero moves with a “Spider-Man: Homecoming” routine for their homecoming rally.
As the school year comes to a close, we have a feeling that the LOHS varsity dance team will be banging, shuffling, and backflipping their way into summer break.
