The inclusion of Madushanka, a left arm capable of swinging the ball at pace, follows impressive recent performances against South Africa A, where he took nine wickets in three 50-over matches and then another four in a four-day meeting, and is due to him becoming the most expensive signing at $92,000 at the inaugural LPL auction. It also makes sense given the vulnerability of Sri Lanka’s seamen. Lahiru Kumara has a recent history of breaking down mid-game, while Dushmantha Chameera’s workload is carefully managed. This leaves only Kasun Rajitha and the raw Matheesha Pathirana as reliable seam bowling options.

In Wellalage, meanwhile, Sri Lanka covers several bases, with the Under-19 captain serving as a skilled left arm spinner – an option currently missing from the roster – while also providing an additional batting option lower down the ranks. He is also one of the better outfield players in the Lankan line-up.

As for Arachchige, he was another one that sparked a bidding war at the LPL auction, eventually being sold for $28,000. It was an impressive sum for a player who has yet to make his debut for the national side, but the aggressive 27-year-old is highly regarded, has recent performances off the bench – three fifties in his last five one-day games, including two against South -Africa A – and is about to make the transition to the international stage.

Sri Lanka won their opening game in the World Cup qualifier against the UAE by 175 points. They will next play Oman on June 23 in Bulawayo.
