The debate about nepotism in Bollywood has been going on for several years now and a number of celebrities have shared their views on it. Recently, Priyanka Chopra weighed in on the ‘outsiders vs star kids’ debate, saying that star kids get multiple opportunities in Bollywood. She said she’s not a “fake baby,” which is why she was terrified when her six films didn’t do well at the start of her career. Now, in a recent interview, Alia Bhatt was also asked if she was tagged as a ‘fake baby’. The actress acknowledged that while favoritism initially helped her get off to an easy start, it can only take an actor so far as ultimately the audience’s decision counts. Alia Bhatt is the daughter of Mahesh Bhatt and Soni Razdan.
Alia Bhatt on being labeled a ‘fake baby’
Speaking to Vogue India, Alia Bhatt said, “All I can do is build a body of work that hopefully proves I belong in this industry.” She further added that she always makes it a point to acknowledge that she had an “easy start” at the beginning of her career. “And of course you get into the room, but then it’s up to you to edit that room. The audience is actually the best judge of talent. You could have a background that supports you, but the public will ultimately decide whether or not you belong there,” said Alia Bhatt.
Earlier, Priyanka Chopra said in Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard that because she didn’t have a godfather in Bollywood, she was terrified if her films didn’t work well initially. “I was terrified when those 6 movies didn’t do well because I’m not a fake baby. I didn’t have that kind of support that exists widely in Bollywood movies. You don’t let your uncle make you another movie just because your last one failed,” she said.
