While the expected launch of Apple’s mixed-reality headset is only months away, some employees don’t seem to think the device is ready yet, according to a report from The New York Times. While some employees have reportedly left the project over their misgivings, others remain skeptical about the headset’s potential for success — especially at a $3,000 price point.
Apple is widely expected to unveil the headset at its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Apple recently demonstrated the device to Apple’s top 100 executives at California’s Steve Jobs Theater, “suggesting a public reveal is imminent.”
But behind the “glitzy” presentation, the Time suggests there has been internal turmoil over the future of the mixed reality headset. While that seems pretty normal when a company makes a foray into an entirely new product category (something Apple has done several times in the past), the Time says things are different this time.

Some internal skeptics have questioned whether the new device is a solution in search of a problem. Time writes. “Unlike the iPod, which put digital songs in people’s pockets, and the iPhone, which combined the capabilities of a music player and a phone, the headset wasn’t driven by the same clarity.”
According to the TimeDoubts from both employees and Apple leaders have some employees wondering if the company will delay the headset launch. However, it doesn’t look like that will happen, as sources tell Time that a June launch is still in the works, as “headset production is underway” ahead of its scheduled reveal in just a few months.
