ISLAMABAD: A court in Islamabad on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant for Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Pakistani leader Senator Azam Swati in the case of a controversial tweet.

Special Judge Central Azam Khan issued the warrant at the request of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) due to Swati’s failure to appear in court.

During the hearing of the case earlier today, the court also postponed Swati’s indictment in the case due to his absence.

FIA prosecutor Rizwan Abbasi asked the court to issue warrants for Swati’s arrest not to be released on bail as he failed to appear in court.

“We acted on the order [issued earlier]. However, Azam Swati was not at his house at the time [the officials] got there,” the officer said.

When questioned about this, Swati’s lawyer expressed ignorance of Swati’s whereabouts and said he was unable to contact his client.

The judge briefly adjourned the hearing and summoned the officer who had been sent to Swati’s house.

When the hearing resumed, Imtiaz, the FIA officer who had been summoned, appeared in court.

He informed the court that neither Swati was present at home nor did anyone open the gate of the residence when he went there.

Subsequently, the prosecution reiterated its request that Swati’s non-bail warrant be issued. Abbasi told the judge that in the current age of electronic media, people are aware of events as they happen.

Swati’s lawyer intervened and said cases of politicians who left the PTI after addressing press conferences had been settled. He asked the court to ensure that before it issues an arrest warrant not released on bail, it must first ask law enforcement to act on the warrants released on bail.

“A Supreme Court ruling has given priority to that [authorities] must first comply with an arrest warrant to be released on bail,” he said.
