Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s first visit to Goa to attend the conference of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) highlighted his grandfather’s legacy in Mumbai, India’s financial capital.
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, former Prime Minister and founder of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Bilawal’s grandfather, moved to Bombay (now called Mumbai) at a very young age, according to a report published by The Indian Express Thursday.
Bhutto is said to live in the Worli area of Bombay and studied at Cathedral and John Connon School and St Xavier’s College before joining the Pakistan Movement.
On October 6, 1948, the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) allocated a plot of 1,226 square meters to Bhutto in Mumbai’s business district, Worli.
The land is one of the last imprints of Bhutto’s legacy in the Indian financial capital.
Bhutto was allocated a bungalow along with the plot for which he had to pay an annual rent of Re1 for the property and Rs 25,343 for obtaining a perpetual leasehold on the property.
Civil sources said the Bombay The Urban Planning Act was still in effect after the colonial era, in which plots and properties were leased to owners. The rental period was subject to the contractual agreement and officials said the primary purpose of this was to promote housing and development in Mumbai, the report said.
However, ownership of the property has changed several times. In 1963, Morarji Family Trust bought it and sold it in 2005 for 120 million Indian rupees to Lodha group and Kheni Estate Private Limited.
While local residents are still unaware of the legacy of this property, Mumbai municipal officials say it has been handed over to another private tenant after redevelopment for commercial use.
SCO meeting
This is according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. FM Bilawal attends the SCO Moot at the invitation of the current Chairman, Foreign Minister of India Dr S Jaishankar.
“Our participation in the meeting reflects Pakistan’s commitment to the SCO charter and processes and the importance Pakistan attaches to the region in its foreign policy priorities,” the FO spokesman had said.
Sources at the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said that the foreign minister, accompanied by a delegation, will depart from Karachi for Goa via a chartered flight.
The sources aware of the development said that the Indian Civil Aviation Authority has contacted the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCCA) and finalized the route for the special aircraft.
In addition to deliberating key regional and international issues and signing some institutional documents, the council will finalize the agenda and decisions to be adopted by the 17th SCO meeting of the Council of Heads of State to be held in New York on July 3. Delhi will take place. 4, 2023.
The meeting will also witness the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with five countries, namely Bahrain, Kuwait, Maldives, Myanmar and the UAE, to become dialogue partners of SCO.
On the sidelines of the SCO, FM Bilawal will also meet its counterparts from friendly countries.
In addition to Pakistan, SCO member states include China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and India.
The main objectives of SCO include promoting mutual trust and good neighborly relations between member states, strengthening regional peace, security and stability, and creating a framework for effective cooperation in the fields of politics, trade and economics, culture , science and technology, education, energy, transportation, tourism and environmental protection etc.
Since joining in 2017, Pakistan has actively and constructively contributed to all SCO activities to achieve its multi-sector goals and objectives in a mutually beneficial manner.
