Busta Rhymes breaks down in tears during his BET Awards Lifetime Achievement Acceptance Speech

Multi-Grammy Award nominee Busta Rhymes just made his name in music history. The “Woo-Hah!! Got You All in Check” rapper was honored with the BET Awards’ Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2023 ceremony in Los Angeles on June 25. The award is reserved for “industry pioneers” and culture changers, according to the network.

At the ceremony at the Microsoft Theater, Rhymes, 51, was introduced by Marlon Wayans and Swizz Beatz before airing a compilation video documenting the rapper’s prolific career, with commentary from his contemporaries, including Diddy, Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson.

“I wear it on my sleeve. I want to cry,” he admitted at the start of his speech. Recounting his early days as a solo act following his departure from Leaders of the New School, Rhymes commented that “a lot of the greatness of our people and our culture is standard, because it’s because of the magic we have.” He told the audience, “I’m just thankful that the blessing bestowed on me and this gift I’ve been given . . . allows me to handle any situation . . . ‘I’m broken.’ I’m just trying to do my duty to move the culture forward and continue to make an important contribution.”

He also had a message for the next generation of hip-hop and rap artists, encouraging them to stop beefing and “love each other.” Rhymes said, “We have to stop this story about not loving each other… It’s corny, it’s crazy.” He also added, “Shout out to every new artist who contributes and does their job,” while shouting out artists like Ice Spice and J. Cole.

Rhymes later returned to the stage, performing “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See”, his feature from MOP’s “Ante Up”, “I Know What You Want”, and his verse from “Look at Me Now”. of his discography.

Prior to the show, Rhymes’ honor was announced by BET. The company’s CEO, Scott Mills, said in a statement that Rhymes “is a versatile, award-winning artist who has captivated audiences for decades with his original hip-hop sound and unique visuals.
