If there’s one thing we as a society should understand right now, it’s that the Kardashian fam may not be the best people to turn to for advice. Between Kim’s weight-loss methods and Kourtney’s supplement brand, what comes out of their mouths is questionable at best — and so is Kourtney’s take on how sperm has anything to do with fertility issues.
On a season one episode of “The Kardashians,” Kourtney revealed that a doctor advised her to drink semen four days a week to improve her fertility. (Yes, you read that right.) In the episode, Kourtney and her hubs, Travis Barker, met with a wellness expert to discuss her fertility issues. There she explained that a doctor advised her to drink Barker’s semen four times a week.
“I can’t remember what he said, if [my fertility count] was low or high. But he told us, well he told me, that the thing that would help was to come and drink four times a week.”
Barker replied with a grin, “I love this doctor.”
The eldest Kardashian sister, who openly struggled with fertility issues but is now pregnant, has not specified who the doctor is or what he specializes in. However, she quickly made it clear that she and Barker didn’t actually try this, ahem, “technique” — opting instead for what’s called a Panchakarma cleanse.
Whether or not the Kardashian sipped her husband’s ejaculation is really none of our business. But in a world of misinformation out there about fertility issues, we knew we had to check with a real ob-gyn — especially given the many viewers who tuned in to the episodes. Here’s what she had to say.
Does Drinking Semen Improve Fertility Problems?
It’s time to add this one to the “BS Things the Kardashians Say” pile, folks. Ob-gyn Daisy Ayim, MD, tells POPSUGAR that there is no truth to this theory. “That’s ridiculous,” she says. “Do what you have to do to enjoy yourself, but ingesting semen has nothing to do with fertility.”
Because the eldest Kardashian hasn’t named the specific doctor who recommended this — and let’s face it, when do the Kardashians not case? — dr. Ayim thinks this may have been a publicity stunt to spark some online chatter. When asked why a doctor would ever recommend this, Dr. Ayim: “I think this is just for entertainment purposes. Entertainment is very grandiose in the way they do things. I’d like to believe it wasn’t a doctor who told her to drink semen to increase her fertility.”
Fertility, of course, can be very complicated. And dr. Ayim says she generally advises patients to enjoy their time trying to conceive. “You want patients to relax and enjoy themselves and not make it a chore.” So if drinking your partner’s semen sounds like a fun way to add some spice to your sex life, by all means join in. Just know that it does nothing in particular to directly improve fertility problems. “There are drugs and things we can do to improve fertility, and drinking semen is not one of them,” says Dr. Ayim.
As for ways to boost your fertility naturally, you can try acupuncture, quit habits like smoking, and get some vitamin D. But more importantly, you should talk to a fertility specialist who can provide medical advice on how to manage your pregnancy. given your specific needs.
Bottom line: “It sounds really cute and laughable on TV, but in real life there are people who actually watch what these celebs are doing and think they should be doing it. No one should ever get medical advice from a TV star. program, “Dr. Ayim advises.
