  • All eyes are on SC as the CJP-led bank deals with the election case.
  • Government can choose to boycott procedures.
  • SC has already rejected the government’s request to form a full court.

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) will hear the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) election case today amid the “No self-confidence” expressed by the ruling coalition in the three-member bench.

The bench – headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umer Ata Bandial – will take up both the suo motu and Pakistan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) petition against the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)’s order to postpone the elections in Punjab until October 8.

The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) recently expressed its dissatisfaction with the court’s handling of the case and urged the formation of a full court.

At the latest hearing, the Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan, as well as the Pakistan Bar Association, requested the court to assemble a full court to hear the case.

However, the CJP-led bank turned down the government’s request.

The court had summoned the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Defense for today.

On Friday, the apex court gave the AGP time to file an answer to questions put to it about the financial and security issues raised by the Election Commission.

On the other hand, PTI has criticized the government for “attacking” the Constitution and fired an attack on the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stating that the party has decided to put pressure on the Supreme Court of Pakistan the country.

Speaking to the media in Karachi on Sunday, Vice Chairman of PTI Shah Mahmood Qureshi said the ruling coalition’s decision to file a complaint against three SC judges was a signal to put pressure on them.

It appears that the decision to submit the referral has been made, he added.

PDM may boycott procedures

Meanwhile, the counsel representing the PDM, together with the Attorney General in the SC, will outline a strategy at 9am today before the start of the hearing in this case.

Kamran Murtaza, counsel for the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F), told The news that they will plead in court after instructions from the PDM leadership.

He said the leadership will decide whether to boycott the court’s proceedings or not.

Since the court has already refused to form a full-fledged court, it will therefore be decided whether to boycott the proceedings or not, he added.

Govt again request for plenary session

This is reported by highly placed sources The news On Sunday evening, AGP Awan will submit before the three-member bank that the parties in the ruling alliance did not trust the bank and that the case should therefore be taken up by a full court.

If the plea is not granted by the chief justice, the AGP would beg to leave the case and inform the court of the ruling alliance’s decision to boycott the proceedings.

In principle, the appeal would be filed on behalf of three major parties of the ruling alliance: PML-N, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and JUI-F.

The constituent parties of the ruling alliance applied for recognition as defendants in the initial stages, but were not accepted as parties by the court until the final hearing.
