Despite showing interest, Jeff Bezos seems to be pulling out of the race to buy the Washington Commanders. Amazon founder Bezos does not currently plan to bid for the franchise. according to The Washington Post. This potentially paves the way for a group led by New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Josh Harris to buy the franchise.

The post reported earlier this year that Bezos had hired investment firm Allen & Company to evaluate a possible bid for the Commanders. The 59-year-old Bezos alluded to the possible purchase of the Commanders during an appearance on CNN last fall. During the interview, Bezos shared that he played football during his teenage years in Houston. The Oilers, coached by Bum Phillips, were among the top teams in the NFL for a time during Bezos’ teen years.

While Bezos hasn’t and apparently won’t, three other billionaire-led groups have placed bids to match current Commanders owner Daniel Snyder’s $6 billion asking price. Along with Harris’s group, Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos, who has been trying to buy a sports franchise, has made his fully funded offer. according to ESPN. The other offer came from Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta.

Harris’s group is leading the way in buying the commanders, according to The mail. Included in Harris’s ownership group is NBA Hall of Fame point guard Magic Johnson, who is a current shareholder of the MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers, the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks and the MLS’ Los Angeles Football Club.

Johnson recently confirmed the bid submission for NBC’s “The Today Show.”

“Our offer is in,” Johnson said. “We hope we win. We don’t know what’s going to happen. … We’ll see what happens when Mr. Snyder makes that decision. But we’re excited about it.”
