Saudi Arabia, American private investors and celebrities are betting big on football.
Global football stars – including Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Sadio Mane, and just recently Neymar – are packing their bags and leaving Europe for Saudi Arabia, which has lured them with jaw-dropping salaries.
Some of the players are already making their debut in the Saudi Pro League, which kicked off last week.
The move to attract football icons aims to transform the game in Saudi into one of the world’s top competitions. But critics accuse the kingdom of “sportswashing”.
