DeAndre Hopkins has been at the center of trade rumors throughout the off-season, but no deal has been made as of yet. To further facilitate a deal, the Arizona Cardinals have allowed the All-Pro receiver and his agents to talk to potential teams and seek a trade, according to SI.com.

The Hopkins merchant market was stagnant. It was initially said that the Cardinals were looking for a second-round pick and another advantage in exchange for the wideout, but no team has emerged to take that prize. This latest report lists Hopkins’ age – he will turn 31 at the start of next season – along with his injury history as part of why teams were afraid to trade for him.

Arizona freshman head coach Jonathan Gannon was asked about Hopkins on Sunday and said he was “because he’s a cardinal now.” Of course, the “at the moment” wording is an important caveat to Gannon’s comments, and he couldn’t go much further in his explanation without stripping away the clout the organization still has.

Some teams are said to be waiting for the price to drop on Hopkins in the wake of Brandin Cooks’ trade to the Cowboys earlier this offseason. Cooks was sent to Dallas in exchange for a 2023 fifth-round pick and a 2024 sixth-round pick. The Texans also play $6 million off Cooks’ 2023 contract. That return is a far cry from what the Cardinals initially asked for. a player in a similar situation. Hopkins owes $19.45 million in base salary next season, so it will be interesting to see if teams will ask Arizona to pay some of that to make a trade more palatable, similar to the chef trade.

The Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs have been two AFC contenders linked to Hopkins in recent weeks. The Bills are looking for another pass-catching weapon for Josh Allen to complement Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis, as Kansas City lost both JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman in free agency, creating a need for the position. Meanwhile the patriots reportedly no longer pursue Hopkins. That said, it will be interesting to see if New England – or any other team – enter the fray again if the price drops for Hopkins.
