Ireland 38 for 2 tracks Essex 343 (Das 132, Dockrell 74, Adair 62, Mayes 4-68) by 305 runs

Robin Das, a 21-year-old British-Bangladeshi batsman, hit 132 off 118 balls in his first first-class innings as Essex had the best of the first day against Ireland in their Chelmsford warm-up match.

Ireland play England at Lord’s in a four-day test on 1 June and this match represents their only pre-season friendly before that match. They arrived in England on Wednesday evening, although a delay in the arrival of their luggage forced them to cancel a planned training session the following day.

With most of the Essex first team unavailable due to preparations for the T20 Blast and injuries, four Irish team members came in for their opposition – including George Dockrell and Mark Adair, who were both half a century away from mid order.

But it was Das, a product of Brentwood School who has already played as a substitute for England in Test cricket, who supported Essex’s tally of 343 and reached a 101-ball hundred before finally falling to Andy McBrine’s offspin.

Thomas Mayes, a 22-year-old sailor, was the cream of the crop on his first-class debut, taking 4 for 68, including the big scalp from stand-in Essex captain Nick Browne on his second ball.

McBrine was roughed up, conceding 98 runs in his 14 overs, while Essex scored at a run rate of nearly five per over in their first innings.

Ireland ended the day two wickets down, with 19-year-old Jamal Richards – another first-class debutant – removing James McCollum and captain Andy Balbirnie.

Paul Stirling missed the first day of the game to fulfill his obligations with Birmingham Bears in the T20 Blast, but will join the side in Chelmsford for the second day.
