If the Tennessee Titans plan to trade Derrick Henry, it will be news to Ran Carthon. The Titans general manager shut down the social media post that the team wants to trade Henry, admitting that the team has not received any calls about the star running back.

“We were also apparently trading Jeffery Simmons at one point and throughout that period we were negotiating his deal,” Carthon said when asked about Henry. “There are things I want to say, but I won’t. It is what it is.

“We don’t do business in public. I always trust to take care of the player and the family.”

There is no indication that Henry will leave the Titans or be traded to another organization, but the three-time Pro Bowler still has one year on his contract with a base salary of $10.5 million. His cap is $16,367,647 for 2023, the last year of a four-year deal with the Titans that he signed in 2020.

Henry was the game’s leading running back for the past five seasons, leading the NFL in rushing with 7,101 yards along with 68 touchdowns – 20 more than the next closest player (Nick Chubb). Averaging 4.9 yards per carry during that stretch, Henry has four 1,000-yard seasons and twice led the NFL in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns (2019, 2020). Henry, the 2020 Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year, rushed for 2,027 yards that year and was only eighth to return to rush for 2,000 yards in a season.

Although Henry’s yards per carry have dropped to 4.4 over the past two years, he is tied for second in the NFL in rushing touchdowns (23) and fourth in rushing yards (2,475). Last season, he had 349 carries for 1,538 yards and 13 touchdowns.

The Titans go no further from Henry. Simply.

“I try to protect the guys as best I can,” Carthon said. “I think we’ve been transparent when things have come up.”
