There will be tight finishes in the IPL, such as between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings on Sunday in Chennai, and CSK should “finish games like this” rather than finish on the wrong side of the result, MS Dhoni said after the last ball loss. And while he praised Matheesha Pathirana’s performance with the ball, Dhoni wants CSK to improve their bowling in the power play.

“We have to look at what we can improve, because you get games like this. But what’s important is to finish games like this,” he told the host broadcaster after the game. “Pathirana bowled very well, but apart from that, the first six [overs] could get better – especially from the fast bowlers. What is their escape delivery they can bowl? Other than that, I’m pretty happy with bowling.”

The numbers match Dhoni. With 10.12, CSK has the highest economy ratio of all sides in the power play this season. In that phase they also conceded 66 fours and 20 sixes, again the most of all games.

CSK batted first on Sunday afternoon, posting 200 on the back of Devon Conway’s 92 not out, and still lost the game. Kings needed 72 to win in the last five overs, but the turning point came just then: 24 runs came from an over by Tushar Deshpande, with Liam Livingstone hitting three sixes from the first four balls of the over.

“I think 200 was par because we know the conditions well. We had to bowl the right lengths,” said Dhoni. “I feel like there were a few times where we weren’t bowling the right lengths. You don’t really want the batsmen hitting up front. So when you have a game plan like that you don’t want to get hit.” [on] that side. So what is important to see if the execution was the problem, or the plan was the problem.

“What was important was to be prepared when the opposition needs so many runs: ‘what’s the delivery I want to bowl’ – be it a yorker or an outside-off yorker? You want to use the dimensions of the ground I think that’s where we got a little wrong.”

But just as they fell short at the end of their bowling innings, CSK also failed to do enough in the last few overs while batting. They stood at 158 with eight wickets in hand after 16 overs, but only managed 42 as they appeared to be on their way to much more, especially as Conway was well on the crease and Moeen Ali had made a fast start. It came down to back-to-back sixes from the last two balls of Dhoni’s innings for CSK to finally touch 200.

“Maybe in the last few overs when we were batting, [we] we could have gotten ten more runs,’ said Dhoni. ‘Are we in that position to get those extra 10-15 runs? Because our bowling lineup needs a lot more exposure, so is it something the batsmen could have done? Or is it something the bowling department needs to look at?”
