Barrymore’s mother Jaid took her to industry parties from a young age, dated her boyfriends and gave her an unstable childhood. Speaking of her friends and their parents, she said, “All their moms are gone, and my mom isn’t.”

“And I’m like, ‘Well, I don’t have that luxury.’ But I can’t wait I don’t want to live in a state where I’m wishing for someone to leave sooner than they’re supposed to so I can grow I actually want her to be happy and thrive and be healthy But I gotta fucking grow in spite of that she’s on this planet,” she told Vulture. About an hour later, she regretted the remark to Jaid, saying, “I dared to say it, and I didn’t feel right.”

“I do care. I never care. I don’t know if I’ve ever known how to fully guard, close, not feel, build the wall,” added Barrymore. In a cover interview from last year in December, the 48-year-old spoke about her relationship with Jaid, how she felt about her, saying: “I will always support her. I can’t turn my back on the person who gave me my life “I can’t. It would hurt me so much. I would find it so cruel.”

She told People that the mother-daughter duo has set a lot of boundaries and taken a lot of breaks in their lives. “Healthy breaks, I’m like, friends have to do it, lifelong people have to do it, this is where we are. The more time passes and the older I get, the less guilt and biting toxic shame and just absolute discomfort comes with it .” The ET star and award-winning actress spoke of the guilt she still sometimes feels for setting boundaries and not experiencing the kind of family she saw growing up.

The more you say, “My God I’m turning 48, when will that guilty little girl who is still so sad that I don’t have this great nuclear relationship with my family, when will that be okay?”

Barrymore further felt that she has been a “circus bear” all her life and if the ringmaster left the tent she would become the ringmaster and start flogging herself. She even asked, “When will I ever give myself a break? What would it be like to be empathetic to that little girl?” She added that she loved romance and drama for much of her life and burned herself out on it. “I’m really tired and exhausted,” she revealed.
