Obvious: You can’t have a software-as-a-service (SaaS) business without software developers. Creative developers build the proprietary and open source code that powers commercial engines around the world. But as we know, technologies can change entire industries. And that begs the question: what is the future of coding in the age of AI?

It’s a huge problem and just one reason why we’re thrilled that Thomas Dohmke, the CEO of GitHub, will be joining us this year for a fireside chat at TechCrunch Disrupt 2023’s SaaS Stage, taking place 19-19. Sept. 21 in San Francisco.

GitHub, which was acquired by Microsoft for $7.5 billion in 2018, is now the de facto hosting platform for millions of open source and proprietary software projects with 100 million active users. It allows developers anywhere to collaborate around shared codebases. Two years ago, the company debuted its AI-powered programming assistant Copilot, a service that provides whole-line code suggestions within popular development environments such as Visual Studio Code.

How will that play out for developers as the capabilities of Copilot and AI expand? Could human coding become obsolete? We are excited to see how Dohmke will navigate a rapidly changing dynamic that could potentially change software development as we know it.

Other possible topics include how open source developers are paid. Products from some of the world’s most profitable companies rely on free open source projects, and not everyone wants companies to monetize that free labor. We’re also eager to learn more about GitHub’s roadmap beyond the Git-centric core products.

Given how quickly AI is changing, it’s hard to know exactly where it will be and what questions will be relevant in September. But we think the conversation about the future of coding — plus Dohmke’s industry insights — will lead to a fireside you won’t want to miss.

Thomas Dohmke, CEO of GitHub, has been fascinated with software development since childhood and built his career by creating tools developers love and accelerating innovations that change software development. He launched GitHub Copilot, the world’s first large-scale AI developer tool, and drives the company’s core mission to make GitHub the home of all developers.

Prior to joining GitHub, Dohmke co-founded HockeyApp and led the company as CEO during its acquisition by Microsoft in 2014. Dohmke holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Glasgow, UK

Discover the SaaS Internship at Disrupt

We heard loud and clear that you wanted more Disrupt, so this year we’re putting the entire Disrupt ecosystem into the main event! Our popular, standalone TC sessions are coming to the mothership for the first time: In addition to the Disrupt Stage, we’re filling six stages with salon-style programs that focus on the industries most important to today’s tech world – enter the SaaS stage .

The SaaS Internship at Disrupt is a full day of programs on how software-as-a-service unlocks creativity and efficiency with mobile apps, cloud-based resources, collaboration tools, creator communities, developer tools, ecommerce, low code, recurring revenue and marketing tools.

We look at the current state of the industry, but most importantly, we look to the future. We talk about what it takes to build a successful SaaS startup in 2023 and how you can get financing, for example. We’ll also look at how to build AI tools into your SaaS product, how some of the larger players are thinking about acquisition in the current financial climate, and – thinking ahead – how quantum computing startups can use SaaS for their platforms.
