Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said on Thursday that the coalition government is ready to hold a grand political dialogue if Pakistani Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan shows willingness to ease the political heat.
“Imran Khan should send two people from his side, while two people from the coalition government will sit together to discuss matters,” he said at a news conference.
The Justice Minister regretted that during the PTI’s four-year tenure, they did not try to restore relations with the opposition.
The leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) said that Pakistan is facing serious economic and security challenges, as well as political upheavals, which require unanimous views from all stakeholders, especially the political parties.
He said that the democratic process in the country continues successfully and that “we must refrain from paving the way for an undemocratic third option”.
ECP decision to postpone elections ‘right move’
Commenting on the electoral dilemma, he said simultaneous elections to the national and four provincial assemblies are the only viable option to bring political and economic stability to the country.
Tarar, while he Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) decides to postpone the date for Punjab general elections from April 30 to October 8 – said the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) took the “right step” by withdrawing the election schedule.
One day, in a surprising development, the electoral body announced the postponement of the upcoming elections in Punjab to October 8, initially scheduled for April 30, citing security concerns as the main reason for the plan change.
Supporting the ECP’s decisionsaid the Minister of Justice that Article 254 of the Constitution states that when an act or thing must be done under the Constitution within a certain period of time and it is not done within that period, doing the act or thing shall not be invalid or otherwise ineffective only because it was not done within that period.
The minister further added that a digital census is underway in the country and its findings will also be collected in the coming weeks.
He said this will ease the concerns of the smaller provinces and provide a basis for constituency demarcation across Pakistan.
“We should not forget that the country also faces security challenges on multiple fronts and that holding elections requires the massive deployment of law enforcement agencies, which is not possible at the moment,” he said.
