  • “Election by consensus is the only solution,” he says.
  • “Just like legislators, judges are not on the same wavelength.”

Responding to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vote of confidence from the National Assembly, Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Siraj Ul Haq said on Thursday that it would be better if the prime minister directly adopts the vote of confidence from the people.

Haq – who was instrumental in bringing the incumbent government and the Pakistani Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to the table — stressed the need for a general election to end the ongoing political crisis and lift the country out of the quagmire.

The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led government and the PTI eventually took part in the elections negotiate table today to discuss the election date by order of the Supreme Court.

Speaking to a journalist, the JI Emir said that both sides should show flexibility for the success of the negotiations.

“Parliament and the judiciary are face to face,” he said.

Haq said that everyone interprets the constitution themselves. He claimed that all constitutional, political and economic crises only affected the masses.

The JI leader stressed the need for consensus among all political forces and said that the election date cannot be fixed at the will of a single party.

“Election by consensus is the only solution [to the ongoing crisis in the country]he added.

“Just like legislators, judges are not on the same wavelength either,” Haq said, adding that rather than making hasty decisions, the matter should be left to the politicians.

The JI leader said his party had initially demanded that a full court be formed to hear the election case.

“Pakistan’s judiciary, establishment and election commission must remain impartial in the election,” Haq said.

The JI leader stressed the need for free and fair elections in the country and said that the institutions have failed to fulfill their constitutional role in the past. He insisted that his party has presented a step-by-step plan about the elections to the Supervisory Board.
