As Roma fans struggle to recover from the Europa League final defeat to Sevilla, Jose Mourinho has created further doubts over whether he will stay or leave. The Portuguese manager is expected to discuss his future at the Italian club in the coming days, right after the end of the season, which ends on Sunday. He said he wants to stay but he deserves more.

Mourinho spoke to Sky Italy after the loss in penalties, his first major European final defeat, and his words sounded like a farewell.

“I want to stay with Roma, but my players earn more and I earn more,” he said. “I’m a bit tired of being a coach, a man of communication, the face of the club saying we’ve been robbed after every game. I’m tired of acting on every front. Next year we play not the Champions League and that’s a good thing because we’re not ready for it.

“I’m going on holiday on Monday. We’ll speak. I’ve told the owners I’ll let them know first in case I open talks with another club. I told the club when Portugal called me in December for a job at the national team. but as of now no other clubs have called me.”

Mourinho may be on Paris Saint-Germain’s radar, as reported on Wednesday, when the French club decides to fire Christophe Galtier despite winning Ligue 1 last weekend. Mourinho signed a three-year contract with AS Roma in the summer of 2021 and won the UEFA Conference League in his first season as leader of the Italian side.

Despite having a year left on the current contract, Mourinho is expected to speak with the owner in the coming days to agree on his future. If they don’t, the two sides are likely to part ways after Sunday’s game against Spezia, when AS Roma must win to qualify for the next edition of the UEFA Europa League. Roma are currently sixth in the table, one point behind Atalanta but also just one point above Juventus. The last match day will decide the future of the club and possibly Mourinho’s.
