Karl Lagerfeld, you would have hated Irina Shayk’s Met Gala Afterparty sweatpants

You can’t know everything about a person just by looking at them. But according to the late Karl Lagerfeld, wearing sweatpants can tell you almost everything you need. In reference to the designer’s infamous disdain for loungewear, Irina Shayk attended the Met Gala after party in gray drawstring sweatpants. She styled the dressy look with a simple white crew neck tank top, layered Ana Khouri necklace and crystallized Jimmy Choo x Timberland stiletto boots, while clutching a burgundy bomber jacket as she walked down the street.

“Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life, so you bought sweatpants,” Lagerfeld wrote in his book “The World According to Karl.” But with all her glamorous accessories, Shayk looked far from defeated. While it’s entirely possible that Shayk wore sweatpants with nothing but comfort in mind since the theme of this year’s Met Gala was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” it’s quite likely that her outfit was meant to be a subtle nod (and maybe even a respectful challenge) to one of Lagerfeld’s more controversial quotes.

At the Met Gala itself, Shayk dressed to impress, wearing an ivory gown by Yohji Yamamoto with folded rosettes and twisted straps. “I am honored to wear this masterpiece to Met Gala tonight,” she wrote on Instagram, sharing that the dress was actually an archival design from 1998. But while her red carpet look was breathtaking, her gray sweatpants ultimately stole the show. Watch Shayk’s unconventional tribute to Lagerfeld at the Met Gala after party.
