Khawaja Asif virtually present at SCO defense ministers’ challenge in India: report

ISLAMABAD: Defense Minister Khawaja Asif allowed to attend the Moot of Defense Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) virtually, The news reported on Wednesday based on sources.

Asif will participate in the two-day SCO moot via video link. The two-day meeting begins tomorrow (April 27) in New Delhi.

Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu will make his first visit to India to attend the meeting. The world time reported.

According to China’s defense ministry, Li will participate in the SCO meeting from Thursday to Friday and give a speech and meet the head of delegations from other countries. The Russian Defense Minister will also attend the event.

In addition to the member states, the meeting of the defense ministers of the SCO will also include two observer countries, Belarus and Iran.

India’s Defense Minister, Rajnath Singh, will hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from participating countries on the sidelines, the report said. They will discuss regional peace and security, anti-terrorism efforts within the SCO and effective multilateralism.

Asif has chosen to attend the regional moot court virtually, but his colleague Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto will attend the meeting of the SCO Foreign Ministers in Goa from 4 to 5 May.

It would be the first trip by a Pakistani foreign minister to India since 2011.

The SCO is a multinational group founded in 2001. China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and India are its members.
