Jazz Chisholm’s rocky start to the 2023 season continued on Wednesday afternoon. The Miami Marlins second baseman turned center fielder left his team’s game against the Minnesota Twins (GameTracker) after slipping into second baseman Kyle Farmer on a stolen base attempt. The Marlins have not yet announced an update on Chisholm’s injury.
Here’s the play. It’s quite a violent collision and Chisholm appeared to be using his right arm as he left the field, although his head also collided with Farmer’s leg. Bryan De La Cruz replaced Chisholm in midfield.
The Marlins built their team around second basemen who played out of position, and Chisholm’s early work in center field isn’t going well. He had several misspellings in Miami’s first six games and, to be clear, the problem is the team’s approach to building a roster, not Chisholm’s effort. He worked hard there, but there will be a learning curve.
Chisholm’s single in the first inning improved him to 4 for 21 (.190) with nine strikeouts in the young season. It’s only been a week, though it’s fair to wonder if learning a new position quickly contributes to Chisholm’s slow start at the plate. Players take defensive struggles to the batter’s box and vice versa all the time.
The Marlins go 2-4 into Wednesday’s game early on. They only scored 10 points in those six games.
