Alessandro Paluzzi, a developer who routinely digs into app code to uncover unreleased features, tweeted early this morning that Meta’s Twitter clone, Thread, had been released on the Google Play Store. However, it seems that this was a mistake as the app is now nowhere to be found.
Paluzzi added screenshots showing some of the UI elements, including the login screen, which allows users to log in with their Instagram accounts, and another screen that lists their followed accounts from the image and video site, allowing them to choose whoever they want follow threads. Unsurprisingly, Threads…is a lot like Twitter. From the screenshots, a new message will show the character count, with a small paper clip to confirm anything. Threads allow you to link to messages. When viewing posts, there are familiar like, repost, reply, and share icons, and user images are small circles. Instagram’s Twitter-esque blue checkmarks are even here.
Threads has been in development at Meta since January under the name “Project 92”. The edge confirmed the name and got a first real look at the app based on an internal company-wide meeting where Chris Cox, Meta’s chief product officer, previewed Threads saying, “We’ve heard from creators and public figures interested in having from a platform that’s run wisely,” unlike Twitter.
That leak served as the catalyst for the cage match we may or may not see between Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter CEO Elon Musk. When word of Cox’s statement Musk, he tweeted that he’s “up for a cage match” if Zuckerberg agreed. The Zuck did it, and now speculation abounds as to whether or not it will.
Meta hasn’t announced an official release date for the app, but its appearance on the Google Play Store likely means a release is imminent. We’ve reached out to Meta for comment.
