The New York Mets announced some changes to their catch situation on Monday. Omar Narváez has been activated from the 60-day injured list after completing his minor league rehabilitation assignment, and to make room on the 40-man and active rosters, Tomás Nido was designated for assignment.

The 31-year-old Narváez has been sidelined since the beginning of April with a calf strain. Narváez shows off a solid bat from the left by positional standards as he has a OPS+ of 100 in parts of eight major league seasons and averaged 14 home runs per 162 games played during that span. He will serve as backup to prolific rookie catcher Francisco Álvarez, who bats from the right side.

As for Nido, his tenure in Queens is coming to an end after hitting just .125/.153/.125 in 61 at bats this season — a dismal offensive performance that recently sparked the boos from the Citi Field crowd.

A Mets epicurean, Nido is under contract until next season and does not have enough service time to make a free pick while keeping his contract. The money involved — the balance of a $3.7 million salary for the remainder of this season and the next — means he’ll likely make up waivers and eventually move to Triple-A as expensive depth unless the Mets work out an exchange.

The Mets go into Monday’s day off with a 30-30 record on the season and in third place in the National League East.
