Microsoft is refreshing the backgrounds available in Microsoft Teams and adding new animated versions. It’s the biggest update to the virtual backgrounds in Teams since the launch of the original collection in 2020, with new options to replace the cluttered room behind you with an idyllic scene.

Initially, this will be a large collection of new still images, followed by some animated versions in June. Microsoft is sharing some details about the new still wallpapers today, but it looks like we’ll have to wait until next month to see how these animated wallpapers compare to those that have been available on rival Zoom for years.

“The redesigned visual library for Teams, with all-new graphics, has been carefully designed to reflect the people who use them and how they work best,” Microsoft’s design team says in a new blog post today. “Looking at the popularity of certain images, we noticed that customers are just as excited to be depicted in fun and imaginative scenes as they are in realistic spaces such as a coworking space, office or home.”

Some of the new wallpapers are popping with color.

There are now six categories of Microsoft Teams wallpapers, including those that focus on wood and light, others with contemporary backgrounds, and some with colorful clouds or mountains. There are even wallpapers designed to be accessible and accommodate how people on the autism scale can be affected by patterns and materials. These are part of a larger “belonging” category that also focuses on vision, hearing, mental health, and more.

The new backgrounds launch today for Microsoft Teams’ 300 million monthly active users.
