It’s been a rough few weeks for Xbox, with fans questioning the state of Microsoft’s console gaming business. First there was news of a 30 percent drop in Xbox hardware revenues, followed by the CMA’s decision to block Microsoft’s massive $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and to top it off redfall launch earlier this week to a very lukewarm reception.

When you combine all this with a quiet year of Xbox releases in 2022, Xbox fans are wondering when Microsoft will ship a slew of triple-A games, as we saw with the Xbox 360 generation.

“It’s not our intention to take Sony or Nintendo out of the console,” said Xbox chief Phil Spencer in an interview with Kinda Funny Games. Spencer said something similar The edge in 2019, with Microsoft’s gaming strategy focused on Xbox, PC, cloud and mobile, not just consoles anymore. Spencer doesn’t think just building great games is enough to win on console:

“I see the comment that if you just build great games, everything will change. It’s just not true that if we start building great games all of a sudden, you’re going to see the console share shift in a dramatic way. We lost the worst generation to lose in the Xbox One generation where everyone built their digital library of games. We want our Xbox community to feel great, but the idea that if we focused more on great games on our console, we’d somehow win the console race doesn’t really fit the reality of most people . There’s no world where Starfield is an 11 out of 10 and people start selling their PS5s, that’s not going to happen.”

Spencer is probably here, but Microsoft’s challenges with Halo infinity And redfall fans have been concerned about some of the biggest titles designed for Xbox fans and Xbox Game Pass. After all, when Microsoft spent $7.5 billion on Bethesda, it was all about “delivering great exclusive games” for Xbox Game Pass.

“I’m mad at myself,” Spencer admits, as he takes the redfall launch with Kinda Funny Games. “The critical response was not what we wanted.” While praising Arkane’s developers, Spencer admits that “at launch, the team failed to meet their own internal goals.”

All eyes are now on Star fieldwith Microsoft confirming this week that it will be showing off new gameplay during its Star field Instant event on June 11. After a controversy surrounding the lack of a 60fps mode for redfallSpencer also says Xbox will make it clear to fans this summer whether Star field has its own 60fps mode on the console.

So what’s next for Xbox right now?

“The console is the core of the Xbox brand, there’s no doubt about it,” says Spencer. “We’ll continue to focus on making sure the console experience is great, but I know some people want to see us as a better green version of what the blue guys are doing, and I’m just going to say there’s no win. ” for Xbox by staying in someone else’s wake. We need to do our own thing with Game Pass, the things we do with xCloud and the way we build our games.”
