  • “I think it’s time for me to do that […] Continue.”
  • He also resigns from all party committees.

Miftah Ismail has decided to step down as general secretary of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Sindh and all other party positions after months of bitterness over his resignation and the subsequent appointment of Ishaq Dar as finance minister last September year.

The former czar of finance announced his resignation from the party bureau in a letter to Ahsan Iqbal, secretary general of PML-N and minister of planning. Geo.tv.

Since stepping down from the portfolio of the Ministry of Finance, Ismail has been critical of the current political system.

But while Ismail openly denounced Dar, the PML-N was not happy with his stance as Shehbaz Sharif, the party chairman and the prime minister, said there is no room for criticism of the finance minister.

In his letter from Saturday, given the impending reorganization of the party structure, Ismail said “I think it’s time to make official what is already true and move on”.

“I therefore tender my resignation as secretary general of PMLN Sindh and also resign from all party committees,” said Miftah, who served as finance minister twice.

Ismail said he was grateful to the party leadership for entrusting him with responsibilities not only in the party but also in the government.

“Party Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif and President Mian Shehbaz Sharif have been very kind and considerate to me over the years. I will always be grateful to them for their support and trust.”

Ismail also stressed that he was grateful to senior leaders Iqbal, Khawaja Asif, Ayaz Sadiq, Pervaiz Rasheed, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and many others who had also been “very kind” to him over the years.

The ex-finance czar said he couldn’t thank them enough for their leadership and friendship.

“While I will no longer be active in electoral politics, I share with you the fervent desire to see a socially just, economically stable and well-governed Pakistan.”
