Pamela Chopra, the wife of the late filmmaker Yash Chopra, passed away this morning. A statement released by Yash Raj Films read: “It is with a heavy heart that the Chopra family would like to inform you that Pamela Chopra, 74, passed away this morning. Her cremation took place today at 11am in Mumbai. We are grateful for your prayers and the family would like to ask for privacy at this time of deep sadness and reflection.” Speaking to Pinkvilla, Lalit Pandit of Jatin-Lalit fame recalls working with Pamela Chopra on Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) and Mohabbatein.

Pamela Chopra had lent her voice for DDLJ’s ‘Ghar Aaja Pardesi’ composed by Jatin-Lalit. “Pam ji aur Yash ji dono hi nahin rahein. She had been a little unwell for some time. We had known each other for many years now and she always showered us with her blessings. She contributed greatly to the music of DDLJ and Mohabbatein, and was a prolific singer herself. She had a great interest in music and would contribute a lot, so maybe that’s why the music in Yash ji’s films was always top class,” says Lalit Pandit.

He recalls participating in music related discussions with Yash Chopra, Pamela Chopra and lyricist Anand Bakshi while making DDLJ. “The final sessions would take place in their home, where we would play them music, and she was always a great host. Everyone knows their hospitality and she was extremely caring for all of us. Itna woh dil jeet leti thi, ki aisa lagta tha ki apna dil hi nikal ke unko de dein. The whole family has a lot of respect for artists,” says Lalit Pandit.

DDLJ’s ‘Ghar Aaja Pardesi’

Talking further about recording ‘Ghar Aaja Pardesi’ with Pamela Chopra, Lalit Pandit shares that she did a lot of rehearsals before recording the last song. “She also rehearsed a lot at her house. Back then we recorded everything live and she sang the whole song in one take. It was her son’s (Aditya Chopra) first film, and great singers lent their voices for the film, including Lata (Mangeshkar) ji and Asha (Bhosle) ji, but her song was equally loved by the audience. In fact, hers is the only song played in different situations throughout the film. We have lost a truly wonderful person. May her soul rest in peace”, concludes the composer.
