There has been a lot of buzz surrounding the New England Patriots and a possible attack on disgruntled Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. After all, Robert Kraft himself noted that rapper Meek Mill contacted him to express Jackson’s desire to end up in Foxborough. While it’s tempting to imagine what New England would look like with a combination of Lamar Jackson and Bill Belichick, the team is reportedly not in the running for former league MVP. Instead, they look poised to double down with Mac Jones.

The Boston Sports Journal has reported that New England is actively trying to add more guns around Jones and the team is confident that with these added guns – along with new offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien – he will rise to the occasion.

This move forward, centered around Jones – which Kraft is reportedly fully behind – is an attempt to mirror what the Philadelphia Eagles have done with Jalen Hurts and the Miami Dolphins with Tua Tagovailoa. Both teams added a true No. 1 wide receiver to their offense last offseason (AJ Brown and Tyreek Hill) and saw a noticeable increase in production from their respective signalers. Hurts turned himself into an MVP-caliber quarterback and had Philly in the Super Bowl, while Tagovailoa led the NFL in passer rating.

Of course, the job now is for the Patriots to find that difference-making wide receiver. This latest report said the team is still involved in trade talks around Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy and Arizona wideout DeAndre Hopkins and things could heat up in those pursuits closer to the NFL Draft.

Hopkins has been a popular trade target among New England fans and the receiver was recently cleared by the Cardinals to talk to teams about a trade. In the past, Belichick has spoken highly of Hopkins’ skills, even saying “he’s as good as anyone I’ve ever coached against”. Given that admiration, you’d think Belichick would inquire now that he’s around, especially if the asking price starts to drop with no suitors springing up elsewhere to buy him.

As for Jeudy, there’s already a built-in relationship with Jones dating back to their Alabama days. The two spent time together as roommates when Jones was a freshman and played together in 2019 when Jones was a sophomore. Given that relationship and Jeudy’s age (will be 24 at the start of next season), it’s arguable that he should be considered the ideal target over Hopkins. That said, the reported asking price for him is higher, as Denver would be looking for a first-round pick in return.

New England has already shaken things up in free agency by adding former Chiefs receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and ex-Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki, but a splash like Hopkins or Jeudy could be enough to put this offense not only in good hands. to go direction. but actually being a feared unit in the AFC.
