At least 39 people have been killed in a fire at a migrant reception center in the Mexican northern border city of Ciudad Juarez.

Hours after the blaze broke out late Monday, rows of bodies were laid out under glittering silver sheets outside the facility, across from El Paso, Texas.

Ambulances, firefighters and mortuary vans rushed to the scene.

At least 29 people were injured, according to a National Immigration Institute official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Ciudad Juarez is an important crossroads for people entering the United States. The shelters are full of migrants and refugees waiting for opportunities to cross over or who have applied for asylum in the United States and are awaiting trial.

The office of the Attorney General of Mexico has launched an investigation and has investigators on the scene, according to media reports.
