Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed disappointment at the biased attitude of the judiciary towards Pakistan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and denounced the “double standards of justice” for his rival in his corruption cases.

He criticized the judiciary for protecting the PTI chief like an iron shield and said the coalition government would make every effort to ensure the rule of law in Pakistan.

“The judiciary has become an iron shield for Imran Khan,” the prime minister said at a cabinet meeting in Islamabad.

The prime minister’s remarks came a day after Supreme Court Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial ordered the release of the PTI chairman and declared his arrest on May 9 as “illegal”.

Khan was arrested from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) premises by Rangers personnel – acting on orders from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) – in the Al-Qadir Trust case.

The prime minister also questioned the judiciary over the treatment of other politicians in the country.

“Politicians were sent to prison on bogus cases. Has a court ever taken it into account?” he asked.

Commenting on the case history by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the prime minister said the anti-graft body spared no one and poisoned the entire country – from industries and educational institutions to religious institutions.
