MARIETTA, GA — Marietta police admitted a serious miscalculation about the suspect’s age and confirmed that it had sent an officer on leave on Wednesday after shooting a 9-year-old boy he believed was actually a 10 year old was boy. “At about 8 a.m., an officer opened fire on a young boy he thought was not 8, not 9, but 10 years old,” police chief Arlon Grieves said, adding that the officer believed he was confronted a slightly older child, immediately fearing for his life, drew his pistol and acted in a way to protect both himself and his fellow officers. “While we regret the error, the officer in question believed this third grader was in fact an adult fourth grader, which actually counts as high school senior. The fact is, if this 9-year-old had indeed been 10 years old – which is the age of a big boy – you would all be applauding us. Simple as that.” At the time of going to press, sources said the officer had been reinstated after it was revealed that the boy he shot was in fact over 9.5 years old.
