Pope Francis is expected to be released from hospital on Saturday, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement Friday.

Francis, 86, was hospitalized on Wednesday for treatment of a respiratory infection.

He will participate in a Palm Sunday mass in St. Peter’s Square, Bruni added on Friday.

On Thursday, the pope ate pizza with medical and police personnel, and on Friday “after breakfast he read some newspapers and resumed his work. His Holiness’s return to Santa Marta is expected tomorrow, following the results of the final tests this morning,” Bruni said.

Bruni had previously revealed that Francis had been given antibiotics to treat infectious bronchitis during his hospital stay.

He spent a second “quiet” night at Rome’s Policlinico A. Gemelli Hospital, Vatican sources told CNN on Friday.

The pope – who suffered from severe pneumonia as a young man and had part of a lung removed – has a recent history of medical problems.

He has often been seen with a cane and sometimes uses a wheelchair due to pain in his right knee. Last year, he canceled a trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan after doctors said he might have to miss a later trip to Canada as well unless he agreed to receive another 20 days of therapy and rest for his knee. Finally, in February, he went to the DRC and South Sudan.

Francis also suffers from diverticulitis, a common condition that can cause the inflammation or infection of the colon. In 2021, he had surgery to remove part of his colon.
