Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari Monday rejected the by-election scheduled for Sindh local elections, drawing criticism from the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) who demanded that the foreign minister “accept reality”.

Bilawal spoke at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in Karachi’s Korangi about his government’s efforts to improve healthcare facilities in Sindh.

To those who said his party had done nothing for the people of the province, Bilawal said: “We have created a network of hospitals across the province. This network of hospitals provides free, world-class healthcare.”

Sindh’s NICBD can compete with any hospital in India, the US or the UK, he said.

The PPP chairman alleged that the “health card” offered in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) was nothing but a fraud.

“In the name of the health card, people’s money was given to private insurance companies instead of hospitals.”

He further said: “I appeal to a particular political party to leave behind its extremist ideologies and its politics of hate.”

Speaking about the midterm elections in the metropolis, he said that they would take place about a year ago.

“While the first stage time was running; However, when they saw that PPP was winning the second phase, they consistently postponed the second phase, citing various excuses.”

For the first time, PPP moved through Hyderabad and Karachi divisions, the PPP chairman said.

He said local elections have been held, but there are no representatives. If the elections had been held on time, the elected representatives would have been there to help them in the flood situation.

“Who prevents people from letting their representatives come to power?” he asked, adding, “We reject this prank of a scheme.”

He requested Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Justice Minister Murtaza Wahab to challenge the scheme in Sindh High Court.

“These powers cannot tolerate that the mayor of Karachi will be from PPP. But soon the mayor of Karachi will be a jiyala.

It should be noted that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) recently announced the schedule for polls for 93 local government seats across various categories in Sindh.

Due to the dropout of candidates, elections could not be held in constituencies in the Karachi and Hyderabad divisions where the LG polls were conducted in January.

According to the schedule, candidates can submit their nomination papers between March 20 and March 22, and the nomination papers review would take place on March 28.

In response to Bilawal’s statement, JI leader Hafiz Naeem criticized the PPP leader. “Mr Bilawal, accept the facts,” said Hafiz Naeem, adding that even after doing everything in its power, the PPP was unable to secure majority votes.

He took a jab at Bilawal and said, “Don’t be afraid of the midterm elections.”

He went on to say, “If you were in such a hurry, why were the local elections postponed for two and a half years?”

Hafiz Naeem concluded by saying that the mayor of Karachi would be with his party.
