Following the martyrdom of a senior army officer in a shootout in South WaziristanPrime Minister Shebaz Sharif promised that “terrorism will be uprooted” from the country “because it goes against the idea of Pakistan”.

“Deeply saddened by the martyrdom of Brigadier General Mustafa Burki and other soldiers. Our brave sons of the soil gave their lives to protect the country from the enemy forces,” Prime Minister Shehbaz tweeted while offering condolences to the bereaved.

A day earlier, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) had reported the news of the martyrdom of Intelligence service between services (ISI) Officer Brigadier General Barki during an intense firefight with terrorists near the Angoor Adda area of South Waziristan.

The army’s media department had shared that seven others were wounded in the firefight.

According to the army’s media department, two of the injured are seriously injured.

“Brigadier General Barki and his team put up a valiant resistance against the terrorists during the encounter and the officer sacrificed his life for the peace of the motherland,” the ISPR added.

It is the second time this year that a high-ranking ISI official has been tortured by terrorists.

In January of this year Naveed Sadiq and Nasir Hussain — the director and inspector of the ISI’s counter-terrorism wing, respectively — were tortured after the duo were attacked in Khanewal.

Sadiq was martyred at a time when he was on a mission to take down the network of a banned group operating out of Afghanistan.

Both officials were posthumously awarded the Hilal-e-Shujaat and Tamgha-e-Shujaat.
