  • At least 15 prisoners escape from prison in Chaman.
  • Prisoners snatch Kalashnikov from prison officer and open fire.
  • According to the police, escaped prisoners have been charged with serious crimes.

About 15 to 20 inmates broke loose on Thursday after attacking prison officials at a prison in the Chaman area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Police said the incident happened when the detainees attacked the officials as they were leaving their barracks for the Eid ul Adha prayer.

The inmates grabbed a gun from a prison official and escaped, they added.

The barracks commander said the escaped prisoners are charged with offenses under Article 302 (punishment of qatl-i-amd) and other serious crimes.

Meanwhile, prison authorities said the inmates opened fire with the same Kalashnikov they snatched from the officer standing outside the facility’s main entrance.

Pakistanis today celebrate Eid ul Adha, or “Bakra Eid,” marking the end of the hajj pilgrimage offered in the last month of the Islamic calendar.
