Punjab Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) on Friday took Pakistani Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Parvez Elahi to a court in Lahore after his dramatic arrest a day earlier.
Provincial anti-corruption watchdog arrested Elahi in connection with a case involving Rs 70 million in corruption in development funds allocated to the Gujrat district – in which his bail was rejected.
It should be noted that two cases have been registered in Gujranwala against the former chief minister of Punjab on charges of receiving bribes in awarding contracts while one case has been filed against the former chief minister in Lahore.
Earlier, a special judge of the anti-corruption court in Lahore issued non-bail warrants for the former Punjab CM, directing the authorities to nominate him by June 2. Two arrest warrants have been issued for the PTI leader. The first was issued on May 25 after bail was withdrawn and the second on May 26.
An anti-corruption team had also previously reached his residence for arrest. However, he could not be arrested.
The Punjab Police and the Elite Force had cordoned off the area around Elahi’s residence and prohibited entering and exiting the house.
In April, the ACE Gujranwala filed a case against the PTI president, citing a source-based report accusing the former Punjab CM of taking Rs2 billion in bribes for the contract of a development project.
In another case, an FIR No. 6/23 was registered against Elahi for taking a bribe of Rs 120 million from an international organization – a Turkish company.
The anti-corruption court judge also stated that Elahi’s medical certificate was false, which alleged that he had chest pains.
