Punjab form body to investigate PTI allegations of mistreatment of female prisoners

LAHORE: Mohsin Naqvi, the chief minister of Punjab, on Monday formed a two-member committee to investigate allegations leveled by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of mistreatment of its female supporters in prisons arrested after the 9 vandalism May.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan had claimed that the party supporters were being “molested and harassed” and urged the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Umar Ata Bandial, to intervene and take cognizance of the matter.

Women are among the thousands of PTI workers arrested in connection with the May 9 violence CM Naqvi had initially argued that women were being treated in accordance with the law, but he has now formed a committee to look into the matter.

According to data available with Geo newsthe two-member commission – consisting of Deputy Commissioner (DC) Lahore Rafia Haider and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Investigation Anoosh Masood – will visit Kot Lakhpat Prison and speak to the detainees.

Earlier, CM Naqvi had said that the PTI resorted to propaganda about mistreatment of women in prisons.

He had revealed that 32 women had been arrested and only 11 of them are now in prison. The prime minister added that it is his government’s duty to ensure that “mothers and sisters remain safe”.

In addition, speaking Geo news SSP Masood rejected all claims regarding the “improper treatment” of female prisoners.

She reiterated that a team of female police officers is committed to the arrest of female suspects/accused who are then held in custody in a women’s police station where all staff are female.

The SSP further added that no male staff member is allowed to go to the places where female prisoners are held.

Earlier today, PTI chief Khan shared a montage on his Twitter handle showing how female workers were treated during the protests held across the country on May 9 following his arrest from Islamabad High Court buildings.

“Women have never been humiliated for exercising their constitutional right to protest peacefully in any democracy, let alone a Muslim one,” the former prime minister wrote.

He claimed this was a planned campaign to depoliticize women in the country.

“The campaign of repression and terror against women is being conducted so that their husbands would discourage their political participation.

“And now reports are mounting that some women are being harassed and harassed in prison,” he wrote.
