Netflix has faced backlash since the release of the African Queens: Queen Cleopatra trailer, as viewers weren’t happy that the Queen is portrayed as a black woman with curly hair. Netizens have accused Netflix of “obscuring the Egyptian identity,” while the historians have claimed Cleopatra was “light-skinned” rather than dark. This Netflix miniseries has also been accused of promoting Afrocentric thinking and breaking media rules.

Now Tina Gharavi, the director of Queen Cleopatra, has criticized the critics of this Netflix miniseries and has spoken out about portraying Cleopatra as a black woman in the upcoming show. Here’s everything we know about the same.

In an interview with the Variety, Tina Gharavi said, ‘Why shouldn’t Cleopatra be a melanated sister? And why do some people need Cleopatra to be white? Her proximity to whiteness seems to give her value, and for some Egyptians it seems to really matter.”

Gharavi said she remembered Elizabeth Taylor playing Cleopatra and was fascinated by her. But the former always thought the image was wrong and wondered if Cleopatra’s skin was really white? The director of this mini-series continued that with this new production of Queen Cleopatra, she tried to find the answers about Egypt’s royal heritage, along with releasing the strange hold placed on the image of the African queen.

Tina Gharavi said while speculating on the backlash, “Perhaps not only have I directed a series portraying Cleopatra as black, but I have asked Egyptians to see themselves as Africans, which is why they are furious with me.” I think this is okay’. She adds that Cleopatra may not have been black, but she certainly wasn’t white like Elizabeth Taylor.

Queen Cleopatra is about to hit Netflix on May 10, 2023.
