Authorities say 28 of 30 drones were shot down over the capital as air raid sirens were heard across the country.
Russia has launched a series of airstrikes across Ukraine targeting Kiev and cities from east to west.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said that according to preliminary information, Ukraine’s air defense systems shot down 28 of the 30 Iranian-made Shahed drones launched by Russia on Tuesday.
About 20 enemy targets were identified and destroyed by Ukrainian forces and air defenses in the airspace around Kiev, Serhiy Popko, head of Kiev’s military administration, said on the Telegram messaging app.
“Another massive air raid on the capital,” he wrote.
Air raid sirens were heard in Kiev for nearly four and a half hours in the early morning hours and for several hours in many other parts of the country.
The military administration of Lviv, a city of about 700,000 that is about 70 km (43 mi) from the border with Poland, said explosions were heard at about 5 a.m. (2:00 GMT) and that Russia ” critical infrastructure” in the city, sparking a fire.
Preliminary reports say there were no casualties.
There were also rocket attacks in the Zaporizhia region of southeastern Ukraine, where Yuriy Malashko, head of the military administration, said Russia targeted telecommunications infrastructure as well as agriculture and farmland in its raids.
There were no casualties in the raids on Zaporizhia.
It was not possible to independently verify the reports.
There was no immediate comment from Russia.
