Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim completely dominated Ireland on the second morning of the Dhaka test. They added 130 runs for the third wicket score in the first session of the day, with Bangladesh captain Shakib leading the way. He was unbeaten on 74 while Mushfiqur was not out on 53 as the home side went to lunch at 170 for 3.

This is their fifth-century position, equaling the Bangladesh record for most 100-run partnerships in Tests. Habibul Bashar and Javed Omar also have five-century stands.

Ireland made their breakthrough early on when Mark Adair knocked out Mominul Haque’s leg stump in the third over of the day. However, Shakib barely allowed the Irish bowlers to settle down. He hit Adair for a four first pitch with cover. He then played out some time, but kept going with the bowlers before finding firm boundaries since the morning’s eighth over.

Shakib had a cluster of boundaries going through the blankets and midwicket. He didn’t need a second invite to free his arms, but the Irish bowlers were pretty average too. He used the bowlers’ pace well too, finding half his limits through fine legs and short thirds.

Mushfiqur was his perfect opponent, turning the shot frequently, but also getting six fours and a six in a row. He took every opportunity to sweep the ball behind and in front of the square on the leg side, but was also quite adept at hitting off anything that threw at a good length.

On the second night, Bangladesh had lost two wickets in ten overs. Andy McBrine had caught Tamim Iqbal at second slip of the last ball of the day after Mark Adair bowled Najmul Hossain Shanto off the inside rim. Ireland had previously been knocked out for 214 runs, with Harry Tector scoring 50, and Curtis Campher and Lorcan Tucker getting out in the 1930s.

Taijul Islam took his eleventh five-wicket haul, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Ebadot Hossain took two wickets each. Ireland escaped a low score thanks to the lower score adding 90 runs for the last four wickets.
