Steelers linked to Ireland, Saints to France as NFL expands Global Markets program

The Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints are the latest additions to the NFL’s Global Markets program for the 2023 season. Pittsburgh, which already had marketing rights in Mexico, has been awarded international marketing rights in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Saints have been awarded international marketing rights in France and are the first NFL team to be awarded the French market.

The additions were made following approval from the International Committee at the Spring 2023 Meeting in Minneapolis.

In its second year of operation, the Global Markets program will include 21 teams in 14 markets, an increase of two teams and four markets from 2022. The program will give NFL teams access to international markets for marketing, fan engagement, and commercialization activities as part of long-term activities. effort to enable clubs to build their brands globally while driving fan growth outside of the US

Other additions included the Atlanta Falcons becoming the fifth team to receive marketing rights in Germany, while the Jaguars also received rights for the Republic of Ireland.

The Steelers and Ireland are a perfect match. In addition to family ties to the area, the 1997 preseason saw the Steelers play in the first and only NFL game played in Ireland. Dubbed the American Bowl, Pittsburgh recorded a 30-17 victory over the Bears and was awarded a crystal trophy that still stands in the team’s facility.
