KHAIRPUR: A schoolteacher who was recently acquitted in a child sexual abuse case has gone missing, his family said, and days have passed with no information on his whereabouts.

The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge-IV, Khairpur, acquitted the man, Sarang Sher, on April 29. Geo news that the DNA reports of the teacher and the child did not match.

The schoolteacher’s relatives have said that while the court has acquitted Sher and no further charges have been brought against him, they are unaware of his whereabouts.

The family claimed that “plainclothes policemen forcibly” took Sher into custody and they fear they could injure or kill him in a “mock encounter”.

His son, Aslam Sher, said police have no record of his arrest, while Superintendent of Police Khairpur Raheel Khoso said he was unaware of the detention.

A video of the teacher went viral on social media two years ago, showing how he allegedly sexually assaulted his student at his home in Khairpur’s Thari Mirwah.

Afterward, police registered three cases — including terrorism-related clauses — against Sher on the charges of the child’s father. However, an anti-terrorism court had struck down the terrorism clauses and transferred the case to a district and trial judge. He was later acquitted.

Sources said that not only did the child’s DNA not match, but the teacher and the child’s father reached an agreement out of court.

Following the acquittal, a photo of Sher outside Khairpur court with a wreath around his neck went viral, sparking renewed calls for action against him.

In response, the government of Sindh directed the province’s Attorney General to appeal the acquittal of the teacher.
