On their last head coach of the season (this one lasts until the end of May, promise, Daniel Levy insists), Tottenham are in desperate need of points in the coming days, but face two extremely difficult tests. Before they face Liverpool on Sunday they must welcome Manchester United to North London with an atmosphere likely to be extremely hostile to the Spurs owners and perhaps even their players. So is the cost of a 6-1 hammering at the hands of Newcastle ended any hopes of a top four finish.

United seem to have that in their pocket, five points ahead Aston Villa and another ahead of Tottenham, but with three games in hand over the former and two over the latter. Erik ten Hag’s team can probably focus on the FA Cup final in June against Manchester City but winning against Spurs would be nothing but a letter of intent for next season. Recommended game | Tottenham Hotspur against Manchester United

Tottenham: Few performances could have had such a disastrous impact as Spurs’ opening 20 minutes at St. James’ Park, conceding five goals from a rampant Newcastle side who probably shattered any false hopes Tottenham had harbored at finish in the top four. Four games into a tenure that would at least reach the end of the season, Cristian Stellini was sacked, Ryan Mason plunged into a major game for the second time in three seasons. Tottenham players were so embarrassed they felt compelled to refund the ticket price of the 3,000 fans who had made the journey to Newcastle.

Suddenly, Tottenham’s season could unravel to such an extent that they would miss Europe completely. If they lose on Thursday and the pair of Liverpool and Brighton make up the points gap in their head-to-head games, Spurs will drop to eighth, missing out on Europe for the second time in the past 17 years. Just like when he took over just before the EFL Cup final in 2021, Mason goes into the frying pan at his highest temperature.

Manchester United: Injuries are starting to bite the field at United, who are afraid of it Raphael Varane can join Lisandro Martinez on the sidelines for the rest of the season. Most worryingly, they may lose another cog from their midfield from Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes – who have never lost a game they started together – with the latter limping out of the FA Cup semi-final at Brighton with an ankle problem.

“We have to wait and see how Bruno Fernandes is doing, we don’t know that yet,” said Ten Hag. “He’s a question mark. But I think we’re pretty okay otherwise. It’s more often players, we protect them, prevent them, but it needs to settle down. We’ve seen him play a full game and that happened in the first half. But tomorrow is soon, we have to see what is possible.”

Spurs tend to rally quite effectively after bottoming out, but they’re just not good enough to beat Manchester United. Choose: Tottenham 1, Manchester United 1
