UN: 258 million people faced acute food insecurity by 2022

The report finds that the number of people facing acute food shortages and in need of urgent food assistance has increased for the fourth consecutive year.

Nearly 258 million people in 58 countries faced acute food shortages last year due to conflict, climate change, the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine, a sharp increase from 193 million last year, according to a United Nations report .

According to the Global Report on Food Crises, an alliance of humanitarian organizations founded by the UN and the European Union, people faced hunger and death in seven of those countries: Somalia, Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Haiti, Nigeria, South Sudan and Yemen.

The report found that the number of people facing acute food insecurity and in need of urgent food assistance — 258 million — has risen for a fourth consecutive year, a “stirring indictment of humanity’s failure” to meet the UN’s goals to achieve a. to end world hunger, said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

“Rising poverty, rising inequality, rampant underdevelopment, the climate crisis and natural disasters also contribute to food insecurity,” Guterres said.

While last year’s increase was partly due to more populations being analyzed, the report also found that the severity of the problem also increased, “indicating a worrying trend of worsening.”

Rein Paulsen, director of emergencies and resilience for the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, said an interplay of causes caused hunger.

These include conflicts, climate shocks, the effect of the pandemic and the consequences of the Russian war in Ukraine, which has affected world trade in fertilizers, wheat, maize and sunflower oil. The effect is acute in the poorest countries that depend on food imports.

“The prices have increased [and] those countries have been adversely affected,” said Paulsen, calling for a “paradigm shift” so that more money is spent on agricultural interventions that anticipate and try to prevent food crises.
