Using Safari Tab Groups

If you use Safari but don’t use Tab Groups, it’s time to change that.

Tab groups, as the name implies, allow you to group a selection of tabs and essentially set them aside for future use. For example, if you have some tabs you use before work and some tabs you use after work, you can batch those tabs so they don’t interfere with each other. You can use your work tabs at work and, when you’re done, swap them for your “after work” tabs with just one click.

You can also have different tab groups for different work assignments or different school projects. People who share a computer may have different tab groups for each user. The possibilities are endless.

Here’s how to create a tab group in Safari.

Create Safari Tab Groups on macOS

There are a number of ways to do this. The easiest method is to create a group of the tabs you currently have open. If you’re about to quit Safari but think you’ll have to pick up where you left off later, throwing your tabs into a group can give you some peace of mind.

You can also create a tab group from scratch if there’s a set of tabs you think you might want to use later. This takes a bit more time, but allows you to be more selective about which tabs to include.

Create a tab group from existing tabs

  • In Safari, click the down arrow in the toolbar. (It’s on the left, next to the button that opens the sidebar.)
  • Choose New tab group with [X] Tabs.
  • In the left column, look for the Subheading group tab. Name your tab group and press Enter.

Create a brand new tab group

  • Click the down arrow in the toolbar. (It’s next to the button that opens the sidebar.)
  • Choose New empty tab group.
  • Name your tab group and hit enter.
  • Right-click on a tab you want to add to the group, click Go to tab groupand select the desired tab group. You can also click the tab and drag it to your group on the left.

To open your new tab group

  • Click that down arrow again.
  • Click the desired tab group.

Once you’ve set up a group, it’s not set in stone. You can customize the composition of a particular tab group by clicking the arrow to the right of it in the list of tab groups in the sidebar. Right click on any tab that appears, and you will have the option to remove it from the group, delete all tabs that appear are not remove from the group, or move to another group,

You can also click the three dots next to the arrow if you want to rename, delete, or share the group, along with other options.

Create Safari Tab Groups on iOS

Tab groups can be synced between iOS and macOS devices, so if you create one on your Mac computer, you can still access it on your iPhone. Nevertheless, if it’s more convenient for you to create these from the Safari app on iOS, you certainly can.

  • In the Safari app, click the tabs button at the bottom right. (It’s the one with two squares.)
  • Press and hold a tab you want to add and choose Go to tab group.
  • Select New tab group.
  • Name your new group.
