Halle Bailey recently applauded her Little Mermaid co-star Melissa McCarthy for teaching her to stand out and say what suits her on set. However, McCarthy was not always so outspoken. Yes, you read that right. McCarthy stated in a recent interview that she once got sick from working on a set so toxic it left many of the cast and staff “crying”. McCarthy learned from experience that she cannot remain silent in the face of inappropriate working conditions.

The 52-year-old said: “I once worked for someone who ran such a volatile, hostile set it made me physically ill.” McCarthy added, “My eyes swelled up, absorbing all this weirdness.”

She continued, “There were people crying, visibly so upset by this one person.” The actress went on to say, “And I think that’s why the manipulation worked because to get to me this person would fire people I loved, which kept me quiet. It was very effective. One day I thought: ‘It ends today!’ I kept saying to them: it stops, it stops. And I now know that I will never keep my mouth shut again.”

McCarthy plays the role of villain ‘Ursula’, the sea witch, in the live-action Disney version of The Little Mermaid. This film marks the Oscar-nominated actor’s Hollywood music debut. She will next make a comedic appearance in a holiday-themed Peacock movie.

McCarthy said, “I was so terrified, and there were times when I felt like, I have no business meeting Rob Marshall, but if I don’t, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life.” She further added: “It went well. It clicked between us. He is such a remarkable and sweet human being.”
